The Department of Agricultural Education which was created in September 2015 is an off shoot of the old department of vocational teacher education established in 1962 by the ford foundation which is now a faculty. Agricultural education has three main area of emphasis which include; livestock education, crop production education and Agric-Business and entreprenship. The vision of Agricultural education is to provide the workforce for educational institution and agro allied industries.

As the pioneerDepartment of Agricultural education in Nigeria, almost all the institution that run Agricultural education programmes in Nigeria university, polytechnics and colleges of education levels are administered by the product of this department. The mission of the department is to address and meet the clienteles needs at all times and location.

The department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in agricultural and Bio-resources education.

AGE 101        Farm Biometrics                                                                                2 units

The basic mathematical concepts that have uses in agricultural education including measurements in agriculture, seed rate, percentages, area, volume, simultaneous and geometry calculations, graph and their mathematical applications in agriculture.

 

AGE 102        Farmstead Planning and Management                                           2 units

Introduction to the concept of school land surveying, farm survey and farmstead planning including tools and equipment involved, problems and prospects of land surveying and factors to consider when planning a school farm layout. Discussion also to include basic principles in the management of the school farm, differences between a school farm and a commercial and or traditional farm; agricultural activities on the school farm; maintenance operations in the school farm and transfer of experiences from school farm to improve agricultural outputs of community.

 

AGE 112        Farm Tools, Equipment& Machines Maintenance                        2 units

Materials for farm tools and equipment production.Types of farm tools – garden tools, tillage tools, harvesting tools etc. differences between tools and equipment.Types of school farm equipment – spraying equipment, harvesting equipment, storage equipment, etc.Use and maintenance of various tools and equipment.Types of farm machines, Maintenance of each like predictive, preventive, corrective and routine maintenance.

 

AGE 122        Forest Management Education                                                        2 units

Discussion is focused on the basic concepts of forestry and wildlife education; forest regions of Nigeria and their characteristics. More emphasis is placed on the importance of forestry and wildlife to national economy; forest and forest products of the locality. Rigorous teaching and learning are directed to the following: balancing the forest ecosystem, game production, natural recreation facilities like game reserves and parks, botanical and zoological studies, medical and pharmaceutical studies, forest reserves and marketing of forest products, management and forest protection, factors influencing forest development and disintegration, interaction between forest and environment, the forest and the life of the community, the role of education in forest management, problems of depleted forest and wildlife resources like desertification and erosion.

 

AGE 124       Crop Production and Soil Management Education                   2 units

Principles and practices of horticulture, including concepts, classification and cultivation of leaf, fruit, and root vegetables, control of pests, diseases and harvesting of horticultural products. Examinations of various recent practices in crop production- nursery practices in crop practices, determination of germination tests, breaking of dormancy in crop seeds, propagation techniques in plants.Uncommon cultural practices in crop production- miniset technology etc. Also to be discussed in the course should be- concepts, physical, chemical and biological properties of soil, determination of soil water level, soil nutrients losses and control measures, soil nutrient availability and plant relationship, soil testing and analysis education, organic and inorganic fertilizer management, materials required in soil fertility and fertilizer management education, principles of soil fertility management, suitability of soils for the cultivation of different crops/plants.

 

 

AGE 132        Livestock Production and Range Management  (Mini livestock)2 units

Livestock concepts, Bee, Grass-cutter and Snail production techniques, conditions that favour their production in schools, breeding, rearing management, harvesting, and marketing of products of Bees, Grasscutters, and Snails. Causes and symptoms of malnutrition in mini livestock and their correction in farm animals.Prevention and control of parasites of the mini livestock in the farm. Also to be discussed is concept of range and range management.

 

AGE 141        Agricultural Financing and Marketing Education                        2 units

Meaning and scope of agricultural financing, agricultural costs, sources of farm financing, agricultural credits and implications.The effects of taxes and subsidy on agricultural finance. Capital formation and agricultural finance institutions, agricultural insurance. Definition of marketing, kinds of agricultural marketing and market situations.Agricultural marketing institutions. Market structure: conduct and performance. Export promotion in agriculture. Characteristics of agricultural production in relation to marketing.Problems of agricultural marketing.

AGE 151       Irrigation Technology                                                                      2 units

The course should expose students to sources of water for irrigation, types of             .               irrigation and their management, problems and prospects of irrigation farming                            .                      in Nigeria. Discussion should also focus briefly on the concept of drainage,

types and their management for farming.

 

AGE 201        Methodology and Assessment in Agricultural Education 2 units

Application of the principles of curriculum and course construction. Attention should be given to specialized methods of teaching and measurement techniques appropriate to agricultural education. Planning of teaching laboratories and instructional materials.Agriculture teacher & his teaching. Assessment techniques in evaluating students outcomes in agriculture. Assessing students in affective, psychomotor and cognitive domains.Types of scales and computing guides in agricultural examinations.

 

AGE 211        Farm Technology                                                                              2 units

Expose students to the concepts and details of: farm technology, need for farm mechanization, sources of farm power, farm implements and equipment – plough, harrow, cultivator; tractor – internal combustion engine, engine systems, mechanisms of two and four stroke engines, description and operation processes. Tillage equipment and machines and how they function. Crop protection equipment, crop harvesting and the associated equipment and tools. Spraying machines, description and operations, processing equipment/machines, maintenance of farm equipment and machines, economizes of agricultural mechanization.

AGE 217  Agro-Climatology                                                                           2 units

Meaning and scope of Agro-climatology. General principles of

agro-climatology and equipment in the study. Climatic factors (temperature,

precipitation, relative humidity, wind, solar,radiations, cloud cover etc.) and

how they affect agricultural productions. Climate change and its effect in

agricultural productions. Ecological zones of Nigeria and the effect on

ecological distributions of crops, livestock and soil formation.

 

AGE 222        Agricultural Field Experience (Crop and Animal Production)    2 units

Students’ active participation in crop production enterprises from layout of the crop to the harvested products. Equipment and tools required for the establishment of the enterprise and management of operations for enhancing productivity of the enterprise. Maintenance of group/industrial farm plots. Establishment of ornamentals/lawn.

 

AGE 232        Livestock Production Education II (Ruminants)                           2 units

Detailed discussion of the concepts, breeds, nutrition(pastures and forage crops), housing requirements, health management and marketing of products of cattle,  sheep and goat. Breeding management practices should be discussed to include; intensive, semi intensive and extensive systems of management from birth to slaughter, milking techniques and processing. Factors that favour their production in schools will be treated briefly. Veterinary care should include environmental factors predisposing animals to diseases, causal organisms, symptoms, transmission and effect, prevention and curative measures for diseases caused by viruses, bacterial, fungi and protozoa, prevention and control of parasites and their lifecycles. How to care/manage young ruminants from day old to weaning, types of building and equipment used in ruminant enterprises.

 

AGE 302        Technology of Breeding Crops and Animals                                2 units

The course should expose students to the basic concepts of agricultural (crops

and animals) in relation to the technologies of their breeding. Basic principles

of genetic engineering, improved breeds and varieties, benefits of hybrids.

 

AGE 304        Practical Farm Work                                                                        2 units

Practical approaches to acquisition of skills needed in the production of crops

including selection of farmland, land clearing, pre-planting operations, cultural

practices, harvesting, preservation and storage, collection, identification and

preservation of specimens of weeds, plant pests, and diseases in the locality,

rearing of animals should be emphasized– poultry, goats, snails etc Experience

in fish production and processing of crop products like palp, cassava, flour etc.

should be emphasized. Assessment should be through process, product

evaluation to show what students have learnt in the farm.

 

AGE 310        Students Industrial Work Experience in Agric. Education      4 units

Students take part in Industrial Work Experience Services (SIWES) and other national Agricultural based programmes in an established agriculture related enterprises. Students are expected to apply basic principles and practices of organization of occupational experience programmes and present a report on the exercise.

 

AGE 321      Livestock Health and Nutrition                                                          2 units

The course should expose students to the principles of livestock health

including etiology, symptoms, effects, prevention and control of diseases of

parasites of poultry, cattle, sheep, goat, pig and rabbits. The course should also

cover animal nutrition. Livestock nutrition should include: importance, sources

and deficiencies, symptoms of the following carbohydrate, protein, vitamins,

minerals, fats and oil, nutritional requirements of livestock, their measurement,

type of ration formulation to be treated.

 

AGE 323      Crop Protection                                                                                     2 units                                                                             

The course should expose students to identification of crop pests and diseases,

various control measures, problems and prospect of crop protection in Nigeria,

protection of stored farm products.

 

AGE 331        Livestock Production III (Non ruminant)   2 units

Detailed discussion of pigs, rabbits and poultry (chicken, quail, turkey), should be done to include; their breeds, housing, feeding, health management (diseases, parasites) and marketing of the products.

Discussion should also include their nutrition, feeds and feed formulation, balanced ration, maintenance ration and production ration, causes and symptoms of malnutrition in livestock and their correction in farm analysis. Prevention and control of parasites in farm animals- dipping, spraying deworming and sanitation.Methods of processing poultry, swine and rabbit, transportation of poultry, swine and rabbit from the farm to markets.

 

AGE 333        Fish Farming and Management Education                                    2 units

Meaning of fish and fishpond, importance of fish in nutrition of the people in the community; types of fish and their characteristics, some common fishes in the environment; types of fishing environment, the type of fishing environment suitable for the schools and its characteristics. How to construct a fish pond and management practices- feeding, fertilizing, harvesting and preservation of fish bye-products and their uses.

 

AGE 342        Intro.toAgric. Economics & Extension Education 2units

The students should be exposed to the concepts and details of: the scope and methodology of economics; demand and supply; concept of elasticity; concept of utility and indifference curves; factors influencing consumers behavior; concepts of production and cost functions; effects of laws of diminishing return in production process; theory of cost in the short and long term; the process of determining the optimum level of in-put; the elements of market structure; princing and out-put policies of a monopoly firm; pricing anf out-put policies of a typical firm in an imperfect market e.g. (Monopolistic competition and oligopoly).

The course should also cover the essence of agricultural extension; methodology of agricultural extension; facilities in agricultural extension; roles of extension workers and benefits of agricultural extension.

 

AGE 351      Soil and Water Conservation Management Education       2 unit

Expose students to the concepts and details of: soil erosion, types, causes, and                   prevention measures; importance of soil conservation in increasing crop      production; the    scope and water engineering; application of

the concepts of hydrology and meteorology to soil and water conservation;

consumptive use of water by crops; application of the principle of run-off in

conservation measures; various methods of soil and water conservation

measures and their limitations; principles of infiltration and percolation;

characteristics of ground water; the uses of hydrography; various forms of fluid flow in pipes and open channels; and forces on plane and submerged surfaces.

 

AGE 403        Farm Business Management Education                                             2 units

The course is designed to introduce students to the nature of farm business

management, the functional divisions in business management, the different

organizations and typologies of farm business, application and management

principles of farm organizations and operations, the concept of farm labour

productivity, how to acquire land for farm business operations, economic

climate and business problems in Nigria and how to acquire capital and credit

for farm business operation.

 

AGE 441        Farmer Education & Productivity                                                 2 units

Concept of farmer, types of farmer and farming enterprise, models for educating farmers, areas where farmers need education. Fundamental education on the techniques of production of local crops and animals.Improvement of local crops and animals through the utilization of research findings. Strategies for communicating research findings to the farmer. Role of teachers of agriculture in farmer education.Educating the farmer on the procedure of obtaining subsidies and agricultural credits.

 

AGE 442        Environmental Education in Agriculture                                       2 units

Meaning of ecology and ecosystem from agro-ecological perspective.Agro-ecological problems/degradation – causes, consequences and remedies. Environmental resources conservation and management approaches. Farm – level application of soil conservation technologies in schools. Farmstead planning and farm sanitation, establishment and maintenance of ornamentals and lawns in schools.

 

AGE 443        Youth Organization & Entrepreneurship in Agricultural Edu. 2units

Rural youths in sustainable agricultural development.Organization of Rural Youths association in Agriculture – young farmers’ club/future farmers of Nigeria. Designing, implementing and evaluating youth programmes in agricultural production. Mobilization, attitudinal re-orientation and leadership development in youths for improved agricultural production.Concepts and principles of entrepreneurship, identifying business opportunities for youth in agriculture. Feasibility study in agricultural enterprises- concepts, principles, features, executive summary, business idea, marketing plan, etc. start-up capital- tupes and sources, cost, record keeping, sourcing information for agro-business, implementation of agro-business ideas etc.

 

AGE 481        Seminar in Agricultural and Bio Recourses Education                 2 units

A consideration, identification and examination of some of the major issues presently facing Nigerian educational authorities regarding the role and nature of agricultural education in schools. Instructional problems of teachers in agricultural education and students’ problems in choosing careers in agricultural occupations are considered.

 

VTE 490         Project                                                                                                4 units

Guided investigation of topics pertinent to the agricultural and Bioresources Education in Nigeria is undertaken by each student. A report of the study is required.

AGE 151       Irrigation Technology                                                                      2 units

The course should expose students to sources of water for irrigation, types of             .               irrigation and their management, problems and prospects of irrigation farming                            .                      in Nigeria. Discussion should also focus briefly on the concept of drainage,

types and their management for farming.

AGE 201        Methodology and Assessment in Agricultural Education 2 units

Application of the principles of curriculum and course construction. Attention should be given to specialized methods of teaching and measurement techniques appropriate to agricultural education. Planning of teaching laboratories and instructional materials.Agriculture teacher & his teaching. Assessment techniques in evaluating students outcomes in agriculture. Assessing students in affective, psychomotor and cognitive domains.Types of scales and computing guides in agricultural examinations.

AGE 211        Farm Technology                                                                              2 units

Expose students to the concepts and details of: farm technology, need for farm mechanization, sources of farm power, farm implements and equipment – plough, harrow, cultivator; tractor – internal combustion engine, engine systems, mechanisms of two and four stroke engines, description and operation processes. Tillage equipment and machines and how they function. Crop protection equipment, crop harvesting and the associated equipment and tools. Spraying machines, description and operations, processing equipment/machines, maintenance of farm equipment and machines, economizes of agricultural mechanization.

AGE 232        Livestock Production Education II (Ruminants)                           2 units

Detailed discussion of the concepts, breeds, nutrition(pastures and forage crops), housing requirements, health management and marketing of products of cattle,  sheep and goat. Breeding management practices should be discussed to include; intensive, semi intensive and extensive systems of management from birth to slaughter, milking techniques and processing. Factors that favour their production in schools will be treated briefly. Veterinary care should include environmental factors predisposing animals to diseases, causal organisms, symptoms, transmission and effect, prevention and curative measures for diseases caused by viruses, bacterial, fungi and protozoa, prevention and control of parasites and their lifecycles. How to care/manage young ruminants from day old to weaning, types of building and equipment used in ruminant enterprises.

AGE 302        Technology of Breeding Crops and Animals                                2 units

The course should expose students to the basic concepts of agricultural (crops and animals) in relation to the technologies of their breeding. Basic principles of genetic engineering, improved breeds and varieties, and benefits of hybrids.

AGE 304        Practical Farm Work                                                                        2 units

Practical approaches to acquisition of skills needed in the production of crops including selection of farmland, land clearing, pre-planting operations, culturalpractices, harvesting, preservation and storage, collection, identification andpreservation of specimens of weeds, plant pests, and diseases in the locality,rearing of animals should be emphasized– poultry, goats, snails etc. Experience in fish production and processing of crop products like palp, cassava, flour etc. should be emphasized. Assessment should be through process, product evaluation to show what students have learnt in the farm.

AGE 310        Students Industrial Work Experience in Agric. Education      4 units

Students take part in Industrial Work Experience Services (SIWES) and other national Agricultural based programmes in an established agriculture related enterprises. Students are expected to apply basic principles and practices of organization of occupational experience programmes and present a report on the exercise.

AGE 321      Livestock Health and Nutrition                                                          2 units

The course should expose students to the principles of livestock health including etiology, symptoms, effects, prevention and control of diseases of parasites of poultry, cattle, sheep, goat, pig and rabbits. The course should alsocover animal nutrition. Livestock nutrition should include: importance, sourcesand deficiencies, symptoms of the following carbohydrate, protein, vitamins, minerals, fats and oil, nutritional requirements of livestock, their measurement, type of ration formulation to be treated.

AGE 331        Livestock Production III (Non ruminant)   2 units

Detailed discussion of pigs, rabbits and poultry (chicken, quail, turkey), should be done to include; their breeds, housing, feeding, health management (diseases, parasites) and marketing of the products.

Discussion should also include their nutrition, feeds and feed formulation, balanced ration, maintenance ration and production ration, causes and symptoms of malnutrition in livestock and their correction in farm analysis. Prevention and control of parasites in farm animals- dipping, spraying deworming and sanitation.Methods of processing poultry, swine and rabbit, transportation of poultry, swine and rabbit from the farm to markets.

AGE 333        Fish Farming and Management Education                                    2 units

Meaning of fish and fishpond, importance of fish in nutrition of the people in the community; types of fish and their characteristics, some common fishes in the environment; types of fishing environment, the type of fishing environment suitable for the schools and its characteristics. How to construct a fish pond and management practices- feeding, fertilizing, harvesting and preservation of fish bye-products and their uses.

AGE 342        Intro.toAgric. Economics & Extension Education 2units

The students should be exposed to the concepts and details of: the scope and methodology of economics; demand and supply; concept of elasticity; concept of utility and indifference curves; factors influencing consumers behavior; concepts of production and cost functions; effects of laws of diminishing return in production process; theory of cost in the short and long term; the process of determining the optimum level of in-put; the elements of market structure; princing and out-put policies of a monopoly firm; pricing anf out-put policies of a typical firm in an imperfect market e.g. (Monopolistic competition and oligopoly).

The course should also cover the essence of agricultural extension; methodology of agricultural extension; facilities in agricultural extension; roles of extension workers and benefits of agricultural extension.

AGE 351      Soil and Water Conservation Management Education       2 unit

Expose students to the concepts and details of: soil erosion, types, causes, and                   prevention measures; importance of soil conservation in increasing crop      production; the    scope and water engineering; application ofthe concepts of hydrology and meteorology to soil and water conservation;consumptive use of water by crops; application of the principle of run-off inconservation measures; various methods of soil and water conservationmeasures and their limitations; principles of infiltration and percolation;characteristics of ground water; the uses of hydrography; various forms of fluid flow in pipes and open channels; and forces on plane and submerged surfaces.

The course is designed to introduce students to the nature of farm business management, the functional divisions in business management, the different organizations and typologies of farm business, application and management principles of farm organizations and operations, the concept of farm labour productivity, how to acquire land for farm business operations, economic climate and business problems in Nigeria and how to acquire capital and credit for farm business operation.

Farmstead planning and farm sanitation, establishment and maintenance of ornamentals and lawns in schools.

AGE 443        Youth Organization & Entrepreneurship in Agricultural Edu. 2units

Rural youths in sustainable agricultural development.Organization of Rural Youths association in Agriculture – young farmers’ club/future farmers of Nigeria. Designing, implementing and evaluating youth programmes in agricultural production. Mobilization, attitudinal re-orientation and leadership development in youths for improved agricultural production.Concepts and principles of entrepreneurship, identifying business opportunities for youth in agriculture. A consideration, identification and examination of some of the major issues presently facing Nigerian educational authorities regarding the role and nature of agricultural education in schools. Instructional problems of teachers in agricultural education and students’ problems in choosing careers in agricultural occupations are considered.

VTE 490         Project                                                                                                4 units
